Well, here it does not seem to have improved things much.  I tried it with
three different setups.  One caused the same errors on the syncterm side
that FDSZ did, one caused the file transfer to end immediately (without
writting a DSZ log entry) -- probably user error, and one caused syncterm
to spit out a whole bunch of new errors that indicated that maybe the
transfer was out of sync before locking up syncterm (and maybe crashing my
dosemu session - not sure there).
 
So, I am back to square one.  :)
