I found a program calles "ansifilter" that looks to be quite featureful and
what I need but Slackware 15 is running an oolder version of glibc so I
can't use it yet.  I could use it if I was running Slackware-current but I
won't use that on a production machine.

Thanks for your help.  This isn't really a critical matter.  I emailed the
author several days ago but no response yet (not really expecting one
either).
