In my case it would never seem to have my exact video card and monitor in the list you could pick from.  So you'd have to cross your fingers and pick something close.... which could result in Xwindows just not displaying... or pick "Generic VGA" and having some crappy resolution and refresh rate.

This was back in 1995 or so.  No idea what distro it was.
