I remember running Redhat 2.x and it asking so many questions about the
hardware in the system, very confusing stuff getting scsi working and yeah
selecting the wrong display settings could actually brick your display. 
As far as once you have it installed how stuff works is pretty similar.
Just now you have package managers and stuff actually seems to work most of
the time.
