There are four batteries on a sliding tray that can be hot-swapped at anytime. It costs about $240 CDN to replace them every 2 to 3 years, depending on how many times the system had to run on backup power. The system runs a self-test every 2 weeks to verify the condition of the batteries. The unit has a daughterboard upgrade slot which takes any APC smart-card, in this case I installed one with Ethernet and a temperature sensor probe. Any change in the power conditions trigger an email to my local SMTP relay. That relay is also programmed to email/post notices automatically after running on backup power for longer than a half hour. The Vmware servers, virtual machines and old BBS hardware can also be powered down after another condition is met. But..... I'm sure our resident professor has a farrrrrrrr better setup.
