I'm not sure I understand what you mean by securing a DOS system in 2021 being difficult? Its DOS... all of my DOS programs I have the source code for. My mailer, my BBS, all of my utilities. As a BBS developer I can tell you that a DOS BBS is far more secure than exposing a Linux or Windows system to the net. Renegade, my BBS software... the core of that code that handles logins and security, access privilege, accounts... That code has not changed in over 2 decades. It doesn't need to change. Its "secure". Its had the maturity of being put through all kinds of hell and testing in the 90's. DOS is not nearly as complex as a modern OS, so theres the security-by-simplicity aspect of things.
