I prefer the default. It gives me a page full of files and I can look closer
at anything that catches my eye.

That is the case with both messages and files. You can go forward but not
back although you can always re-read.

I think nightfox has a full screen reader for the message areas and you can
page up or down when reading messages. He wrote something like that for file
areas too but I have never had a look at it so I'm not sure if that would
look backwards.
