This is the same exact problem every time a dialup-caller logged in when I
tried running things in a VM. The Fossil driver completely ties up the CPU
with I/O port calls for the modem. It didn't matter if Vmware was set to poll
or yield the CPU usage on the serial port.

Maybe you should ask our resident professor how to fix it?
