Installs just a bare-bones OS. I'd guess no noticeable speed increases other than what time it took the CPU to look through the list -- less items to look through. Speaking of speed, I did install a solid state drive in an older system I had been using mainly as a Frontend for MythTV plus some on-line odds and ends.
