Allegedly, it was detected by the Canadians when it was in their airspace,
and they contacted the US government to let them know.  It became public
knowledge because civilians spotted it.  If it had not been spotted, I am
not sure the government would have told us about it.

Also makes me wonder if it happens more often than we know.
