Apparently by the time I saw the  report (happened to also an NBC
affiliate) the statement had been revised to saying we (the U.S.) didn't
want to shoot the balloon down as it may cause a shoot first, ask
questions later (my words) type of reaction from the Chinese and they 
might shoot down any commercial aircraft which might stray into China's 
airspace.

At the time I saw the report for some reason I was thinking it would be
funny if this thing turned out to be a rogue weather balloon.

I'm wondering how come it wasn't detected before it was over Montana and
Missouri: the middle of the country.  So this mystery object which
apparently can be seen with the naked eye escaped detection by air 
defense??
