It sounds like the LED itself is failing.

Had similar with a light bulb that went. For about a year it would 
randomly blink a few times a day. Then it got dim and flickery. Replaced 
bulb, end of problem.

The power LED doesn't monitor anything, it's just on or off when the 
power is.
