Subj : Steampunk Pi To : Ky Moffet From : Barry Martin Date : Sun Aug 02 2020 07:49:00 Hi Ky! > > He did learn something from the snoozing students in the lecture hall! > KM> Haha! While back he did a video on how he does videos -- actually > KM> full of useful info! > Making good videos is more than aiming the camera in the general > direction and tapping the record button. KM> Yeah, it's actually a lot of work. KM> He sometimes does a clever thing when talking about different KM> apps and OSs... he'll start inside some application, then zoom KM> out to show us the OS. Sort of an element of surprise: normally application is associated with a certain OS but (surprise!) can be run on this other one also. > > ..Was sort of nice to see he as a professional and knowledgeable person > > also had those change of plans as the project progressed: what works on > KM> Yep, he likes to show how things Didn't Work As Planned too, but > KM> usually with a Solution or Workaround. > Which could help with self-esteem: "he did it soooo easilty"! Nope, he > had a few false starts also. KM> And the mistakes are just as informative. With him being experiencd (or at least more so than most watching) the viewer would expect to see the direct journey to the final finished product rather than the one with the detours of routes which didn't quite work out. Plus most of the time any errors have been removed from the final video, relegated to the blooper reels. KM> EngelsCoachShop (who is about 20 miles from me) also sometimes KM> 'shows his work' that way, but he does everything easy-breezy. KM> Well, when you're repairing a 150 year old wagon, there ain't no KM> rush! When the wheel needs repair you're not going anywhere! > Yup. And a side note on the Raspberry Pi 4: the have two mini-HDMI > ports -- use the one next to the power connector as the other one > doesn't have sound. Or at least doesn't if the only HDMI port used. KM> That's strange. It actually sounds like a driver bug. Is this a KM> known issue or something you should report? Known issue. I don't recall why two mini-HDMI ports nor if the second one has sound after the first one is used. And I'm not the only one to have fallen into the trap. Don't have an RPi 4 manual handy but do recall the manual that came with the kit I purchased did have a comment on using the port closest to the power plug. Of course I read that after! Did look at the diagram with the parts and ports location but that didn't say anything other than 'HDMI' -- "HDMI 1" and "HDMI 2" would have been helpful. ....Did look online a little: the ports are marked on the PC board HDMI0 and HDMI1. I find those identifications difficult to read when the case is surrounding. And the RPi4 will do two monitors out of the box, so double the screen space! > > KM> While back Chris had one comparing various SD card options that > > KM> was so useful, I printed out the results chart to carry with me > > KM> for when I next buy SD cards. > > Oo! Have the link? I've see where a brand looks to be the same except > > the colour is different. Obviously a reason, but what? > KM> http://doomgold.com/pcstuff/USB/ > KM> ready to print. :D > Thanks!! (I've got to get working on my website -- but first!) KM> Haha... websites I have aplenty, but haven't changed the guts KM> since they first went up in 1998... ain't broke, not fixing it, KM> don't care if it looks older than dirt. Or if the color schemes KM> of the day were sometimes comical... they're to amuse me, not KM> you! I tend to leave alone also, and plain does have advantages over fancy, though depends on the circumstance. > KM> His video would have been in March but since the New Youtube > KM> nuked the Old Mobile Interface (and the joke is on them... ever > KM> since, all their ads error out!), I can't get channels to come up > KM> (and if they do, there's no way to Sort All by date)... um, I > I thought I have been able to get to the content without ads a lot > lately! Do and don't go to YouTube that much: usually prefer text KM> Yeah, tho sad to say they seem to have 'fixed' that. Joke is KM> still on them... there's a Youtube ad blocker for Chrome. KM> And I'm that much more likely to go off to Invidio.us instead KM> (Youtube relay site), where the ads cannot follow. I wouldn't KM> mind if it was short ads fore and aft (and if most weren't either KM> noisy-stupid or for outright scams), but I've seen a 30 minute KM> unskippable ad in front of a 5 minute video, and that's when I KM> said screw you. Oh, and if you leave the page up after your vid KM> is done, after a while it will often start playing ads KM> continuously. Oh goodie! And yes, a half-hour ad is way too much! Equates to an informercial on TV. Regular ads are usually only 30 seconds. If a minute it better be entertaining! KM> That camera shop in NYC (the famous one whose name I can't KM> remember) actually did an ad so right that they had a huge number KM> of viewers follow the ad back to their own channel, and play it KM> again. It's not often you see an AD with a million independent KM> views, when it's just a normal "here we are and what we do" and KM> nothing funny about it. Now that's a good ad! I have found some TV ads to be worthy of watching several times -- some of the Progressive insurance, GEICO insurance.., we started watching the cavemand TV show because of the ads: how are they going to do it? Ended up not very well: think we watched three shows and it was cancelled after the fourth. > KM> think this was the benchmarking video: > KM> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUResed38uo > KM> and here's another with info on different types of current SD > KM> cards, including the numerous speed classes: > KM> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUResed38uo > Will check those out -- might be doing screen shots or taking notes. KM> I think I already did all the best screenshots. You'll have to KM> take screenies of different stuff. :D Here's a picture of him fumbling with the cable.... Here's one where he dropped the rear panel screw.... > KM> Got a laugh from one of the comments... "this man looks like a > KM> cross between the Beatles and Bill Gates." :D (I swear, never a > KM> hair out of place and always looks the same. The black shirt is > KM> for green screen filming, tho.) > As for green screen, every so often one of the meteorologists > would wear something with the right green, or detected as the right > green and portions of the overlay would show up on jackets/ties/blouses. KM> Oh yes, I've seen that, it's hilarious. Or you get a floating KM> severed head. :D They haven't done that one yet. Closest was the lining of a jacket was allowing some of the green screen to come through. > KM> A fair generalization for flash storage is that higher capacity > KM> is faster, because smaller bits means shorter distance per > KM> read/write. > Though that occasionally backfires: haven't tried with the RPi 4 but the > older Pi's took forever to boot with a large capacity card. KM> Yeah, it's still gotta be within capacity for the internal KM> drivers. Someone gift me a middle-aged (well, newer'n mine) KM> digital camera -- Sony Cybershot -- and was astonished to KM> discover that it maxes out at a 32GB SD card... my old one takes KM> 64GB no problem. The Sony is also very slow on still shots (like, KM> on par with my 15 year old Olympus, er, Fujifilm 200), but much KM> faster on video shots. Well, I guess we know which job it gets! Yup! ...Because of the past experiences with slow loading/booting and the file system barrier I've pretty much have stayed with 32 GB and smaller cards. Will eventually try a larger capacity card with the RPi4 -- or 5 -- depends when I get around to it! Right now no projects needing a lot of local storage. > KM> Oh, for the Pi enthusiasts, a comparison of Pi OSs: > KM> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSF_jXGH4EQ > I'm going to be busy later! KM> Heh heh... I have like 15,000 unwatched videos in queue.... Can't watch the cute kitty videos when the dogs are around?! > > .. Suffer from insanity? No, enjoy every minute of it! > KM> We of the diseased minds... > I never claimed to be totally sane! KM> I have an idea. I'll claim to be totally insane instead! that way KM> the sane parts will stick out. Er, stand out. > .. Screen. Mind. Both are blank.
