(OHIO PENN DX) ** KICKER: RESPONDING TO HELP THE FIRST RESPONDERS NEIL/ANCHOR: Three months after vandals destroyed a key emergency communications tower in Coos County, Oregon, all leads have turned cold. The tower for the Coos Mountain Repeater, a vital resource used by firefighters, loggers, and amateur radio operators, near the Oregon coast, was discovered damaged after a sheriff's deputy answered a call on June 17th, reporting an act of criminal mischief. Authorities arrived on the site, and discovered the 150-foot tower had come down, after the guy wires were cut. The tower was in ruins, and most of the repeaters were destroyed. Capt. Gabriel Fabrizio of the Coos County Sheriff's office told Newsline that the damage, first estimated at $60,000, actually turned out to be in excess of $100,000. The vandalism also impeded radio capability for first responders, and others in the region, although he said that for now, emergency communications needs are being covered. He told Newsline, however, that there are no valid leads, and no one from the public has come forward, despite several requests from the sheriff's office. He said he hopes that someone may yet step forward with new information that would help in the arrest and conviction of the vandals, who would be charged with felony criminal mischief. The office awaits a response - this time on behalf of the first-responders themselves.
