The battery heard us talking. It finally died, and was replaced with 
another AA.

I've seen the adapters but it doesn't need one -- the AA fits plenty tight.

Weirdness: For a couple days before, the clock had been gaining more 
than usual (it always gains a wee bit, but before this it was about 15 
seconds per year). Then suddenly it wasn't running at all. One last hurrah??
