Minor correction: you probably tuned in the FM band; a television's audio
signal was FM.  One could listed to Channel 6 on a regular FM radio if 
the radio could be tuned a smidgen past the low end at 88 MHz.

If the reels were stored properly you might have pieces of history!  
Magnetic media is the archival media of choice for data.
