It would go through the motions but nothing happened. If there's no driver, the usual linux thing is the device simply isn't available. It won't show up at all. I have some that are the same size as a wireless mouse dongle. I have a bunch and have found generally the smaller it is the better it works. Larger and more expensive usually means older tech.
