Subj : slow the growing of g To : Daryl Stout From : Barry Martin Date : Wed Jul 05 2023 07:33:00 Hi Daryl! BM> Of course they increased it! :( Just thought of something: does BM> Arkansas have a homestead (or similar) exemption? DS> There is a deal on the property taxes to "hold them steady" DS> (mainly for real estate, such as the house). That is available if DS> you provide proof you're disabled, and/or on a fixed income. AFAIK you're definitely fixed income and borderline disabled. (You're right on the boarder! --Punning around with my previous spelling error.) DS> The car's assessment went down each year, as the value DS> decreased over time. But, if you sell the car AFTER May 31, you DS> STILL have to pay the taxes for the year you sold it in. So, I DS> got stuck with that. At least they give me until Oct. 10 to pay DS> everything, as I have other bills between now and then. I so rarely replace my car they probably change the law more often! Plus Iowa law might be different; seems like the registration fee/taxes are for the next year, and one doesn't get the sticker (or plates) until paid. DS> Last year, I got stuck with paying my brother's property DS> tax...but this year, I mailed his to him. I figure if he can DS> afford to eat out at a restaurant every day, he can afford to pay DS> his property tax. And, if he loses his property for failure to DS> pay, he is NOT coming here to freeload off of me (being here, DS> without paying half the expenses). I will get a restraining order DS> against him, and have him arrested and removed from the premises. DS> The bottom line is that "it's not right to let him have everthing DS> for nothing, while I get stuck with it". Agree: from what you have said in the past he doesn't have his priorities straight and I can easily see if he was to need to live with you you'd be getting the short end of the stick. DS> The home insurance I pay monthly, and while it costs more in DS> the long run, it'd take 2 months of what I get on disability to DS> pay the premium in full. After the claim I had in 2020 (I had 1 DS> other claim 30 years prior), they spiked the rate. The insurance companies seem bound determined to not let go of their profits! DS> The increased rate is DS> about $50 more per month...had it been more than that, I would've DS> changed coverage (I still have a $1000 deductible to pay on most DS> items), or found another company. However, I have a feeling that DS> all the prices are similar. It might be worth checking, if for nothing more to be satisfied knowing you're paying a reasonable rate. Personally I wouldn't change if saving only a few dollars a month as sometimes 'long-term customer' has an influence. Some years back I casually inquired on my car insurance with an independent agent: they represented Progressive as well as several regional companies. Ended changing to a company based in southern Iowa (support the home state! ) and quite happy with them -- had one accident (other driver crossed into my lane); the insurance company processed my claim quickly and went after the other driver's company to reclaim their money.
