Yeah..a concrete solution would also require a proper prep of  
the ground under it.

Or.. lay out patio stones in a kind of checkerboard manner and  
plant specific things in the open spaces.  Meanwhile, paint the  
patio stone green.

Weeds are subjective. Anything that is NOT desired is a "weed".

Some people consider clover a weed, but it can be wonderful  
solution for a low maintenance lawn and it is a supportive  
habitat for bees.
