Yeah, it hangs by the cord just fine. Question is where to hang it so 
the cord isn't in the way and doesn't require lots of hooks to reach the 
spot. White cord doesn't show up against white walls so not much of a 
problem, but yes you can magic marker them if you're desperate. And it's 
just a standard 5v jack and should work with any cord that fits.

Vibration is what sets it off. I sometimes come out to find mine some 
odd color, or even turned off. Tap it repeatedly to make it randomly cycle.
