As to the phone thing:

I switched to Ting. It uses Verizon or T-Mobile depending on which way 
your phone swings. Most unlocked phones will work with Ting. It costs me 
$10/month (plus a couple bucks tax) for unlimited calls and text, no 
data. (Data is extra. Or they have plans with data, but I only use the 
phone at home so I have cellular data set to disabled, and it uses wifi 
instead.) Tech support is humans with clues, not bots and press 1 to 
hear another menu.
