I think you are right on the 'died of loneliness: humans are a social animal and require contact with others. In some cases can be substituted with pets or stuffed animals, dolls, etc. As for your mother not wanting to share information, might be maintaining her independence (I can do it without help), not wanting to burden you with additional stuff (you have your own to do, I'll manage). No real suggestions on how to get around, just continue to be there and try to find information and preference as the opportunities arise. Probably a hint might be to keep pen and paper (notepad) handy -- shirt pocket? You probbaly could remember something like "cremation" but maybe not "St. Anne's Church in Barrington".
