That's a common and very specific symptom of low thyroid. Muscle of the 
iris gets weak and can't close far enough, so the retina gets too much 
light, and complains about it being overly bright... even if it isn't 
really very bright.

Being in tough shape after a busy day, ditto.

[80% of people over age 50 have some degree of hypothyroidism, but TSH 
test will not pick it up; you have to test T3.]
