Subj : computers was: Resend mov To : Nancy Backus From : Barry Martin Date : Wed Jul 01 2020 09:05:00 Hi Nancy! NB>>> Not quite.... ;) But he does have them all around him as he sits NB>>> at his computer desk.... most are some sort of laptop.... :) BM>> All makes sense when one thinks about it a little. Different machines BM>> for different jobs. Here I could combine computers but easier and BM>> better to have some as dedicated to a particular job. No one-size- BM>> fits-all rule! NB>> Exactly. :) He likes to do his internet browsing, etc with his linux NB>> machine, but some websites require windows of some sort... And some of NB>> the programs he writes are for more than one platform, so he has to test NB>> them out on different machines with different OSes... and so forth... ;) BM> I haven't run across a website in some time requiring Windows, but BM> that could be because the Ubuntu version of Firefox has gotten better BM> at decoding the Windows commands. NB> Or you are just going to different websites.... ;) That could be: subconsciously ignoring the ones leaning towards Windows. BM> Still, if one (Richard) wants to run a programme on various platforms BM> one needs to test with the various platforms. Maybe for initial ease BM> and convenience put it together on a virtual machine, but for the BM> final verification steps pretty much need to run on a true machine. NB> Pretty much... One should in general find out the why to anything before argueing. :) For me a Virtual Windows works for what I do; for The Wizard and for what he does only real Windows would make sense. I prefer using a "full-sized" monitor and computer, plus use a 'portable computer' (smart cell phone) for when convenient. Others use only their cell phones because of what I interpret as advantages of a large/stationary system they find as drawback. BM>>> Solved that problem with a 3 TB hard drive! ...414 GB (17%) used -- BM>>> wellllll, maybe was a bit of overkill! NB>>> Ummmm, yes..... I'd say so.... just a bit of overkill... For NB>>> now, anyway... ;) BM>> Too much storage is better than not enough. I had semi-calculated how BM>> much I probably needed, based on the old computer's storage, the BM>> tacked-on external drive, etc. Must have counted something twice! NB>> Or what was newly available was obviously going to be at least NB>> enough, and then some... ;) BM> Something like that! :) ...Better too much than not enough! NB> True. ;) The good news is can add on an external drive very easily if one doesn't wish to go inside. Did that option with the old computer. Went inside plenty of times, and off-hand seems like there was an empty bay but as a temporary computer didn't want to bother. Or at least emphasise the temporary to get me to build the new machine. ¯ ® ¯ BarryMartin3@ ® ¯ @MyMetronet.NET ® ¯ ® ¯ (Humans know what ® ¯ to remove.) ® ....
