Subj : Fiber Optic Update To : Nancy Backus From : Barry Martin Date : Sat Jun 27 2020 09:29:00 Hi Nancy! BM> Another update! Called tech support for my lack of connectivity issue BM> -- didn't tell them about the Ethernet line issue -- that was sort of BM> my fault but the installation tech should have caught that last Monday. BM> Anyway, I get to sit here while the Tech Support guy runs a few tests. BM> Ends up I'm missing a piece of hardware! Have whatever the device is BM> on the wall (might be just a demarc type box), have the modem. Now BM> need a router between the modem and the rest of my system -- according BM> to the tech my computers can see the modem, the modem can see my BM> devices, they just don't know how to talk to each other. Probably also BM> explains why I have been unable to 'see' the modem (ping IP_address, BM> nmap or otherwise find the device address). NB> Well, that clears things up nicely... ;) Yup! I know I don't know at that much about fiber optic but the generalities still apply. Which is kind of funny as that's close to the way the second tech described things as we were chatting about my old tube-type oscilloscope, the serial port data switch he took a picture of for the joke about why the customer only had 1 Kbps service, etc. BM> So theoretically my problems will be over around noon tomorrow. Or BM> today as this will be uploaded my tomorrow. NB> And are you flying now....? Overall yes! Will be interesting as I see I have a software update waiting on this machine (Ubuntu). Was reasonably fast with the DSL (8 Mbps), plus goes to a solid state drive (SSD) which is much faster than the hard drives with the platter. Yesterday did an update to an older machine -- is a Frontend in the Living Room and that computer is pretty much used for only MythTV, so watching recorded programmes vs. 'computer work'. The download of the rather huge update didn't take long but the installation portion did (because it is an old/slow computer). ¯ ® ¯ Barry_Martin_3@ ® ¯ @Q.COM ® ¯ ® ....
