Subj : Emerg. Broadcast Stations To : Nancy Backus From : Barry Martin Date : Fri Jun 26 2020 15:53:00 Hi Nancy! BM>>>>> I should try DuckDuckGo again -- admittedly one of those deals where NB>>>> Curiously, recently I've been seeing billboard ads for DuckDuckGo, as NB>>>> well as hearing them be a sponsor for NPR... ;) They are pushing one NB>>>> of their other strong points, the privacy issue, since they don't NB>>>> track where you go... BM>>> They don't; everyone else does. (Not a slam at DuckDuckGo: BM>>> everyone tracks no matter what search engine.) NB>>> Ah, but they dump the cookies along the way, and don't let the others NB>>> track the way they'd like to... BM>> Hmmm... OTOH I do frequently use 'Private Mode' of Firefox. Probably BM>> similar though not the same. NB>> I'd have to ask the Wizard on that... I'd guess not similar enough... BM> And Richard might not be familiar enough as he uses DuckDuckGo instead BM> of Firefox. ...Learning session for all! NB> He's checked out the alternatives from time to time, so probably NB> does know about it... Probably. BM>>>>> Heck, my mind sometimes wanders so far it needs a passport! NB>>>>> With special visas as well, eh...? ;) BM>>>> Maybe special MasterCards and Discovers as well! NB>>>> Only if you are planning to charge an humungous amount.... ;) BM>>> We'll put a bunch on this card, and a bunch on this other card..... NB>>> Balance it out... but one still has to pay eventually.. ;) BM>> Yup! Good news is I/we haven't had to play Bill Roulette ==> pay this BM>> one but not some other. NB>> Or use one to pay the next.... No, best to stay on top of things right NB>> along and pay as you go, whether running things through cards or not... BM> Yes, best to stay on top of things but not always possible: low-paying BM> job -- "get a better paying one" isn't always possible due to various BM> roadblocks or conveniences (if can't afford a car to get to the BM> better-paying job....). NB> One has to be very careful in that sort of circumstance not to NB> let the card (or access to credit) be a trap.... Yes: Rule #1 is it is not 'free money': it does have to be paid back. And the credit rules sometimes seem backwards: if you need to borrow money you can't get the credit to do so; if you have the money and don't need to borrow money they pester you to borrow! BM> Part of the bill-swamp might be the use of plastic along with the lack BM> of receipts. With cash had a physical symbol of coming ins and going BM> outs. With credit cards there's a piece of plastic which doesn't BM> change other than getting worn-looking after a while. NB> At least if one keeps the receipts or at least closely monitors NB> the statements when they come, one should have a clue... but the NB> mindset that plastic isn't really money is easy enough to fall NB> into... until the bill comes and it's too big to pay off at NB> once... Yup. People need to be taught (and more importantly realize) to journal their income and outgo in some manner, IMO other than a pie chart or list provided at the swipe of a finger or mouse click. My way is to hand-write the numbers in the checkbook and a journal. Makes me more aware the numbers are attached to real money. BM>> I remember when the store switched over to direct deposit: no physical BM>> paycheck to symbolize payment of the work I've done. Work work work BM>> and nothing in return. Sure, the money was in my account, just I BM>> didn't get to touch it like with the paper paycheck. NB> A different psychological/mental impact.... ;) Yes: I was raised with paper so when "took that away" the link between work and payment was gone. ¯ ® ¯ Barry_Martin_3@ ® ¯ @Q.COM ® ¯ ® ....
