There are at least three date options on food: think they're "Sell By", "Best By" and probably plain ol' "Expires". IIRC "Expires" usually meand one doens't want to eat it after that date (unless frozen). "Sell By" usually means isi usually good for a week or so after the date, like milk. "Best By" is usually dry groceries like cake mixes: no problems with being consumed after that date, just the cake might not rise or have the full intensity of the flavouring.
