Subj : FWIW - Shingrix To : Nancy Backus From : Barry Martin Date : Fri May 08 2020 09:32:00 Hi Nancy! NB>>> My one sister has a habit of multitasking with phone calls... used NB>>> to be, she'd call while she was in transit between places, now she NB>>> calls while she's busy sewing up face masks... one can hear the NB>>> whirring of the machine in the background... ;) BM>> Some people can do need to do some other task while talking on the BM>> phone (don't do videochat!), others need to sit and only talk. NB>> Depending on the call, sometimes I can do something else besides just NB>> talk (once in a while, I'll get started on doing a bbs run when a call NB>> is running late; sometimes I'll be sitting doing solitaire), but NB>> usually, I need to focus on just the call... BM> Yes, I almost always need to concentrate on the conversation going on, BM> though I will admit sometimes portions aren't that interesting and a BM> game of Solitaire is popped up. NB> Yup... when the caller is nattering on and on on the same NB> thing.... ;) That's when one sets up a random utterance generator: randomly sythensizes "uh-huh", "really?". "huh!" when one goes to the bathroom, makes a sandwich, .... BM>> At the apartment I would start sitting and then start slowly pacing. BM>> It helped the phone had a realllly long coil-cord! NB>> I've been known to do that.... haven't lately, though... And even NB>> better than a really long coil-cord is a cordless handset... BM> I don't know if I could afford one back then! When I first moved in I BM> think it was still illegal or at least not allowed for people to work BM> on their own phone lines. The phone in the apartment was hardwired. BM> At the time answering machines had a mechanical contraption to lift the BM> headset to answer the call. NB> Cordless phones might not have been available back then either... NB> The corded phone on the kitchen wall has had a extra-long NB> coilcord for most of the time we've been living here... we'd worn NB> out a couple coilcords already before we got our first cordless NB> phone... ;) Yes, I don't recall when cordless phones became generally available either. Had to be after the public was allowed to plug equipment in - so late 70's? NB>>>> Some supplements can be helpful in boosting one's immune system, in NB>>>> one way or another... :) BM>>> True, though may be skewed: someone taking supplements is probably BM>>> more likely to eat healthier, and do healthier activities including BM>>> washing hands, which would help stay healthy. I do take a small BM>>> assortment of supplements, seem to help which is good enough for me. NB>>> It still depends on the person... I've known some that take loads of NB>>> supplements and then expect that alone to keep them healthy... ;) BM>> The overall base diet needs to be decent; supplements are just that: BM>> supplemental and not primary. And some may help with disease control: BM>> when I broke my femur they found my blood serum Vitamin D was low so BM>> said I needed to take supplements; a couple/few years later I had too BM>> much floating through so told to stop the Vit D specific but continue BM>> with the 'with D' (such as Calcium with D as opposed to just Calcium). NB>> I use celery seed instead of gout medications, and cinnamon in various NB>> forms (one also has vit D added) to help control blood sugars... for NB>> my bones I'm taking a calcium chew which has added vit D and K... also NB>> a magnesium supplement as my levels were low... all doctor approved NB>> and/or suggested... BM> Hmmm: making a note on the celery seed and gout. I don't have BM> problems but don't recall that usage. NB> It's one of a good list of foods and herbs/spices that could be NB> helpful to combat gout, which also includes cherries... one can NB> eat 4 ribs of celery a day instead of taking the usual medication NB> (allopurinol) and get the same results... or one can get it more NB> efficiently with celery seed extract capsules... ;) So I take NB> the capsules daily and also use celery a lot in cooking... :) Seems the best of both worlds: concentrated extract so easier to consume the greater amount needed, plus from the natural source because who knows what trace amounts of other nutients is found in the natural source. BM> As for calcium, I take the old-fashioned pill, though one looks like BM> a mispackaged suppository!! Very elongated oval! Is the 'softgel' BM> version which I accidentally picked up. Admittedly goes down easily! :) NB> Never have seen or tried the softgel version, but the regular NB> pill didn't seem to work that well for me besides being more of a NB> pain to swallow.... so I've just used the chews, which have NB> worked well for my assimilation of the calcium... As long as it works. I generally have no problems swallowing pills, though the tiny ones sometimes don't want to go down (follow up with a large one - so much for than problem!). As for the chews, never really needed here but glad they're available for you. NB>> I do, though, sanitize the cart handles and such as I get it at the NB>> entrance to the store.... either with the wipes they have available NB>> or the hand sanitizer with a paper towel... whichever is there... BM> I would do the same except I get the cart from the cart corral in the BM> parking lot and bring it in. Combination of helping by bringing in a BM> cart I'm going to use anyway, the small cart which I prefer isn't BM> always available in the vestibule (all in use or outside), and when BM> walking in winter through slush, etc., the cart helps steady me. NB> All good reasons... ;) If I grabbed a cart from outside, I'd be NB> careful not to touch it much with bare hands, and grab a wipe as NB> I go inside to wipe it down... ;) I've noticed, also, that when NB> the "Helping Hands" people are bringing in the carts, they're NB> wiping down the cart handles just before pushing the line of NB> carts into the store.... Good on the wipe-down. One problem with gloves is most people don't remove them properly, so ending up touching a potentially contaminated surface anyway. BM>> Yes. As I said in an earlier message, the Pharmacy is not doing any BM>> shots currently unless absolutely required; if someone was near the BM>> end of their six month period they would receive their second shot but BM>> those of us with plenty of time will be delayed. The Pharmacy Tech BM>> said the earliest would be May 1st but she also indicated probably BM>> another several weeks after that; still plenty of time on my schedule. NB>> Makes plenty of sense... and as I said (probably in response to your NB>> earlier message), when I asked here, I got a similar response, but NB>> without any estimate of when they expect to do shots regularly again... BM> Wegmans may not have known, or decided not to give a date as too many BM> people heard "May 5" instead of "hopefully starting May 5". Plus BM> you're New York and I'm Iowa and there are different state regulations. BM> Both of us will just continue the periodic casual asking. NB> Yes, mostly I think that there are just too many unknowns yet to NB> even guess at when things will happen here... and yes, we'll just NB> keep asking every so often... ;) There was a sheet included with my paperwork when I picked up my prescriptions yesterday indicating my second Shringrix shot was due. Was auto-generated; I didn't see it until I got home but will ask in the near future when they want to give the second shot. Right now Iowa/Scott County is still under restrictions; I have no reason to accelerate getting the shot. BM>>>>> Will ask and do some on-line checking; probably put a note in my BM>>>>> calendar to inquire in four or five years -- what is said now may BM>>>>> not be accurate later. NB>>>>> And you might be conflating with the older vaccine, too.... BM>>>> True. May be if the patient had the Zostavax plus Shingrix at certain BM>>>> ages does one thing or 'early Shingrix' (before they ran out) has one BM>>>> rule and 'new Shingrix' (the one currently) has a different rule BM>>>> because of the way it was produced. NB>>>> Lots of variables... BM>>> So this thread will be continued in five years!! NB>>> Or at least picked up again... BM>> The Thread That Would Not Die!! NB>> There are a lot of those, actually... BM> Some have been strung along so long they're becoming ropes! (I BM> couldn't figure out how to use 'string' reasonably properly so had to BM> go with the past tense.) NB> Could have said something like, String it along long enough and NB> it'll become a rope... Put a few together and we are starting a chain! NB>>>> Right... I did see that... :) Like I've been saying, quite possible NB>>>> you were a test market for the coffee-flavored M&Ms, and now you'll NB>>>> just have to wait until they decide to bring them out for real... or NB>>>> never see them again, when they decide not to do so... ;/ BM>>> Too bad I don't need something inexpensive at Amazon: combine that BM>>> purchase with the ones I had seen there! ...Wonder if still BM>>> available?! NB>>> Maybe... but quite possibly not.... unless they happened to still NB>>> have some of a stock left over... BM>> I need to check again; did buy some HDMI cables from Amazon (better BM>> deal than eBay for what I wanted) -- bought four at $25.99. Needed BM>> one, wanted at least one spare, so that was two and possibly three. BM>> Another spare was stretching that a bit but getting over the #25 for BM>> free shipping helped the decision! NB>> And you didn't get the coffee-flavored M&Ms at the same time...? NB>> I'm guessing that when you do click on them (if still appearing, NB>> anyway) that they'll be unavailable after all.... BM> Need to check Amazon again - was on last night to order another BM> Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB) kit -- didn't need anything to get me to the free BM> shipping! At Hy-Vee yesterday did pick up a bag of Fudge Brownie BM> flavoured M&Ms -- haven't had any yet. NB> Haven't seen those here yet.... I bet you are a test market for NB> M&Ms... Maybe! The Fudge Brownie M&M's were a good news/bad news type of thing: they did taste like a decent fudge brownie, not sugary sweet like some of the boxed and individually packaged ones (I'm thinking "Little Debbie" but don't know if they have such a thing in their assortment). The bad news -- not really 'bad news' but both of us thought was good for a one-shot purchase, not like the coffee-flarvoured ones which were a repeat occasional buy. I'd recommend the Fudge Brownie flavour as a 'something a little different'. ¯ ® ¯ Barry_Martin_3@ ® ¯ @Q.COM ® ¯ ® ....
