Subj : Eggs! To : Nancy Backus From : Barry Martin Date : Tue May 05 2020 10:45:00 Hi Nancy! BM>> doing the same speed. There were sections without a speed limit BM>> posted, generally everyone doing probably somewhere between 65 and 70 BM>> (MPH), with the occasional speedster but I'd guess 80. Essentially the BM>> same as 'wide open spaces' here except they're speeding above a posted BM>> speed. And will also state my experience is limited to Austria and BM>> Slovakia; maybe the Germans put the pedal to the metal. NB>> Definitely higher speeding in Germany... My son has driven the Autobahn NB>> in Germany, and he was the one reporting that speeds were in excess of NB>> 100MPH, ie 160 KMPH or higher.... that was in sections with no posted NB>> limit... :) BM> OK, that speed is definitely more than I'd be comfortable at! ...I BM> don't think I'd drive that fast; as a passenger with my cousin driving BM> maybe -- he'd be more used to that speed, coordinating with the other BM> drivers,... NB> In a solid car built for speed, on a road built for speed, and NB> with a driver used to speed, it shouldn't be too bad... ;) I NB> don't think I'd be up to driving over 100 MPH... with a posted NB> speed of 70 MPH, I'll possibly be going 75, and I've gone 80 NB> where that's the posted speed... There's also something about the speed perception if one is seated low to the ground versus up higher. Not recalling which is which but one 'altitude' it feels like one is travelling a lot faster then the same speed at the other. And with less driving -- originally due to retirement and now most places closed -- it feels like anything above 40 MPH is too fast. Just used to in-town driving. NB> When I was young, I took my NB> Duster up to about 90 once.... it was at night, open highway, no NB> other cars around, straight-away road... Didn't stay there for NB> long... the hood on my car started to lift, so things weren't all NB> that steady at that speed... And haven't done it since.... I NB> probably could have done it with my Shadow... and possibly also NB> with the Volvo I have now... but haven't had the urge at all... :) So you were a wild woman!! And having a hood lift either means it wasn't latched properly or a lot of slack in the mechanism. I've seen a police show or two where the hood of the car being chased opens -- one did remarkably well driving with hood pinned against the windshield. BM>>> You might need two pages for Minnesota's winters!! NB>>> True.... I do have the back side of my note paper blank still... could NB>>> expand it... I had started with one column for 10øC up to 35øC, NB>>> during the summer/fall months... then added the second column to take NB>>> it down to -4øF for winter... :) Other than windchill, I don't think NB>>> it got that low this past winter here.... BM>> My chart gets extended! We regularly got to -4øF; windchills BM>> sometimes 40-below. NB>> You do get more extremes in temps than we get here... :) BM> Appears so! NB> And you can keep them... Guess I know what not get get you for your birthday! BM>>> Right! Any temperatures I write in letters have both units; the BM>>> handy-dandy temperature conversion chart is - um - handy up here at BM>>> the computer desk, though usually I do a quick check of weather BM>>> conditions prior to calling. Weather doesn't come up all that often. NB>>> Plenty of other things to talk about, eh...? ;) BM>> Definitely, though the past few phone calls my Aunt has been a bit on BM>> the grimpy side so not too much of anything. NB>> I trust she's doing better...? BM> At this point physically OK but mentally about the same: probably a BM> combination of being stuck in the recuperating facility and so away BM> from home plus not being able to have visitors. As I mentioned in a BM> previous packet I'm not sure she's gotten any get wells cards much less BM> other mail which would also amplify a sense of isolation. NB> And we are in a season of enforced isolation.... Guess you'll NB> just have to keep calling her to cheer her up.... Yup - some of the staff are recognizing my voice! BM>> We tried closing the drapes -- didn't help. Finally taped some tin BM>> foil strips to the window -- those blow around in the breeze. ...This BM>> morning barely any breeze for a while so he did come and sit on the BM>> window sill, sort of looking in forlornly: poor guy probably lost his BM>> girlfriend, has a headache from trying to come in, and now we're BM>> trying to scare him away. Wind picked up and haven't seen him. He BM>> just wanted to provide a nice place for his girlfriend to have their BM>> babies! NB>> Or couldn't figure out why there weren't any portals in that NB>> expanse... BM> He seemed to have tried just about every access he might hame imagined BM> he saw! NB> Poor thing.... ;) One would have thought he would have gotten the idea after the first few beak-clunks. He was able to see through the window as when we started to go into the Dining Room he's stop trying to fly in and wait until we left. Pretty sure he could see some reflection off the glass from the outside which he obviously thought he could fly through but after a dozen or so attempts one would think.... In the mean time haven't see Birdie except the few times the day after we put the foil strips on the window (outside). The foil strips did tear in the wind; masking tape down the center solved that. BM>>> Yes: helping out Taste of Japan would make sense to do! On this side BM>>> didn't eat out all that often anyway so nothing to really get invested BM>>> in. The Village Inn down the hill from here closed -- not due to lack BM>>> of business with the coronavirus but just lack of business in general. BM>>> The construction of the new I-74 Bridge really hurt them. NB>>> And probably the virus was the last straw.... BM>> Possibly. Probably. There have also been a couple of other privately- BM>> owned restaurants which have closed. Good news is so far most have BM>> been struggling through. NB>> Maybe some will revive once the strictures lift.... BM> Hopefully! And I'll admit to be getting a little antsy to go out to BM> eat. Have suggested take-out/delivery but so far 'nah'. NB> It's just not the same.... but when one is really wanting NB> something, it definitely is better than nothing... ;) Yes, eating in the car or rewarming at home just doesn't quite do it, though as you indicated better than not at all. NB> Richard's NB> been really missing some of our other usual haunts.... Friday, NB> instead of bringing home supper from the grocery store along with NB> our groceries, we went down the road to a Vietnamese restaurant NB> he often has lunch at when I'm out with one of my friends... NB> brought home takeout from there, which hit the spot nicely... ;) Good! NB>>>> As long as yours is a smartphone, you'd just access their website NB>>>> with your phone and set it all up there in your phone from there... BM>>> Hy-Vee's digital ad does have a method to 'add to list'. I have tried BM>>> it a couple times in the past: didn't like it, but then I was also BM>>> still going old school and printing. Haven't tried all-electronic yet. BM>>> Will wait until the remodel is done: right now for me easier to look BM>>> at the piece of paper to remind me of what I overlooked wandering BM>>> through their new layout. NB>>> Old habits have their uses... BM>> Plus a good use for the recyled paper stack! NB>> That, too... :) BM> I find some processes easier and more convenient to use paper, for BM> others to do an all-electronic version, and for other a combination. NB> I tend more to all paper or a combination for most things.... NB> except for email and echo messaging... ;) Yes, e-mail is a lot easier without paper! As I said before, for me some things are easier to write on paper, others to make a note on the computer. No real 'rule' as to when or why, just whatever I find more convenient at the time. BM>> True. "Perceived value": "it's brand name therefore it _has_ to be BM>> better!" Not always: have had where we like the store brand's taste BM>> better. NB>> And some stores' brands are as good as or better than the national NB>> name brands... Still a few instances where the name brand has some NB>> advantage, though.... BM> Agree. Personally I don't like the taste of the house brands compared BM> to Velveeta, so to me worth spending a couple of extra dollars. OTOH BM> most of the crackers and nuts the Hy-Vee brand is just as good if not BM> better so save money there. NB> I wouldn't be getting Velveeta anyway, but agree with your NB> point... ;) I'm not sure if Velveeta is one of those acquired tastes. I should also mention I've been purchasing the Mexican flavour which has a slight bit of tang as opposed to the somewhat blandness of the regular flavour. Have not had what I'm recalling as a "Bianco": seems like that would be even blander. BM>>>> (Reminds me: I have some fruit chews to snack on because Autumn BM>>>> didn't like.) NB>>>> At least that's people food... BM>>> That reminds me: there's still some in the cabinet in the Kitchen. NB>>> Used any yet...? ;) BM>> I did have a couple for snacks. And then I forgot about 'em until BM>> just now! NB>> Figures... ;) BM> In the interim they're still one or two packets down there. Guess I'm BM> a cookie over fruit chew kind of guy! NB> Have to bring them up so they're handy... ;) Have to remind myself to do that -- the two/few are still down in the kitchen! ...For that a paper reminder would seem more appropriate! BM>>>> There are four packets of Ramen noodles in the pantry storage cabinet BM>>>> in the basement because I bought them as a joke before I left for BM>>>> Vienna last year. (So you won't starve [even though you do most of NB> the BM>>>> cooking].) Maybe I should bring one up and have for NB> lunch -- have BM>>>> leftovers for today's lunch.... NB>>>> One way to try them out, anyway.... ;) BM>>> That reminds me! NB>>> And...........?? ;) BM>> That one hasn't had any activity! NB>> Probably have to bring one up just so you think of it when you might NB>> be hungry.... ;) BM> Those are still downstairs. Did see a recipe for making a BM> granola-type snack with Ramen noodles. NB> I foresee a lot of But Firsts getting in the way of trying out NB> that recipe... I'd do a regular Ramen Noodle meal, possibly with the pot pie added, before the dessert/snack. ¯ ® ¯ Barry_Martin_3@ ® ¯ @Q.COM ® ¯ ® ....
