Subj : FWIW - Shingrex To : Nancy Backus From : Barry Martin Date : Tue Mar 24 2020 08:57:00 Hi Nancy! BM>>> customer notes the 'free/covered by most insurances' at pharmacy BM>>> with the sign: "hmmm: wonder if mine does the same?" and checks out. NB>>> And so, theoretically, more people get their shot, and there is NB>>> more protection overall.... :) BM>> In theory. On one hand does provide some protection with the BM>> generation of antibodies, on the other hand such as with the flu shot BM>> is missing some. Could be better than none. NB>> I was thinking more in the overall case, that more people getting NB>> their shots would mean overall a better protection as fewer people NB>> would be likely to get sick from the flu in the first place.... so NB>> less exposure for everyone... :) BM> You're probably right: less sickness tends to be healthier! (Yes, I BM> did type that on purpose!) The less spread of nasty germs the better, BM> so the washing of hands, sneezing into the shirt/blouse, etc. NB> And having fewer germs TO spread.... :) Yes, can't eliminate and the general problem seems to be one gets sick when overwhelmed. I don't know the scientific part as to the overwhelmed point is, and seems that would vary from individual to individual. Still, avoidance seems the best policy, to minimizine. Need some to build up immunity. BM> (Sneezing into ones hand slows the airborne transmission but BM> accelerates the physical contact mode, not just shaking hands but BM> touching stuff.) NB> Yes, best to sneeze into a tissue (and toss it at once), or into NB> the sleeve... :) And even after sneezing into a tissue and disposing it don't shake my hand, not touch the box, etc., then hand to me! BM>> OTOH using Shingrix as an example I had Chicken Pox, probably twice, BM>> I am at risk for Shingles and have seen what happens to others -- stab BM>> me! NB>> I'm on board with the general efficacy and usefulness of NB>> vaccinations... I've had all mine... and will eventually get this NB>> one too.... BM> Shingrix can sort of be delayed because your somewhat covered by the BM> original vaccination. NB> Oh... that's the one exception... never did get the original NB> shingles shot.... the Zostavax.... Oops! Maybe go and give the pharmacist/health care provider something different beside COVID-19! BM> Was reading where Shingrix may not be the one-dose-and-done as BM> originally thought -- seem to recall reading a recommendation for BM> another round in five years. Will see what my medical doctor BM> recommends when the time comes. NB> I thought it was just the Zostavax that was likely to need the NB> booster.... the Shingrex is a two-dose shot from the get-go, so NB> I'd think it would last more than just five years.... Guess we'll find out that answer eventually. Right now have a note paperclipped to my calendar to start asking about the second dose towards the middle of April -- I can get the second shot after April 20 IIRC. Will ask and do some on-line checking; probably put a note in my calendar to inquire in four or five years -- what is said now may not be accurate later. BM>>>> Quite possible. And I haven't checked at the gas stations to see if BM>>>> she was able to get any in from her second supplier. Last week was BM>>>> only one week and she indicated the earliest would be closer to two. NB>>>> Just have to be patient... ;) BM>>> And when coming home didn't even think to stop at the gas station; BM>>> didn't even think of it earlier that morning. NB>>> You'll think of it next time you need gas, I suppose... ;) BM>> Apparently I wasn't meant to yesterday: coming back from the grocery BM>> store did think of it: "I have to get in the other lane" but cars BM>> over there. Travel, travel - temporarily forgot (self-driving cars BM>> have been around for decades: human drives out of habit!) - 'oo! I need BM>> to get over!" but more cars. NB>> And certainly not important enough to risk an accident to get over NB>> into the proper lane... You'll get there soon enough... ;) BM> Cause of crash: hankerin' for M&M's. Hmmmm! NB> Nope, that doesn't fly.... Checked two weeks ago and didn't have; will check later this week as some of my Gas Points Perks are expiring. ¯ ® ¯ Barry_Martin_3@ ® ¯ @Q.COM ® ¯ ® ....
