Subj : Being Full To : Nancy Backus From : Barry Martin Date : Fri Dec 06 2019 09:45:00 Hi Nancy! BM> morning 30ø and only supposed to get into the other end of the thirties BM> today. A good indoor-project day, especially as tomorrow and Wednesday BM> are supposed to be warmer. NB> Except for the shoveling that Richard has needed to do, indoor NB> projects have been a better idea here, too... and the warmer NB> isn't coming here until Sunday and the beginning of next week... NB> Saturday and Sunday we are supposed to get sun, but then it's NB> rain.... sigh..... Well, rain doesn't have to be shovelled! OTOH it is kind of nice to see a clean white landscape. Next Sunday here is supposed to be in the 40's and rain the latter half; Monday starts in the low 40's and drops into the teens with snow. NB> (Big flash, no sound - apparently caused electric grid across NB> street NB> to go down) NB>>> Sounds like the neighbors did have their transformer blow, possibly a NB>>> bit more spectacularly than yours had done... Fortunate for you that NB>>> you weren't affected.... maybe the power company has got things well NB>>> enough isolated that it didn't cause even a power dip for your section. BM>> Possibly. A few days later the power dipped and heard a 'boom!' a few BM>> blocks away. The power company has seemed to done improvements to BM>> keep the electricity flowing: much less intereference during lightning BM>> than a decade or so ago. NB>> One would hope that the newer tech would make things better... :) BM> Back almost ten years ago was chatting with the probably supervisor BM> when 'our' transformer blew its fuse yet again -- I probably commented BM> on not hearing the 'boom' as the fuse blew, he commented they sometimes BM> used a quieter type of fuse in residential areas. And I remember BM> commenting some time back when they replaced the transformer they BM> installed a 'squirrel guard' on it. Not quite sure what it looks like BM> as I don't see a chicken wire fence type of thing over it but whatever BM> it is generally works. As for the lightening effects, that's one heck BM> of a engineering feat, especially as I didn't see any changes to their BM> transmission lines. NB> Maybe you just didn't hear the boom when it happened...? ;) NB> Especially if they were using a quieter fuse....? Probably a quiet fuse, though surprised didn't hear arcing from the flash. And based on the flash surprised there wasn't damage to the electric system, tree catch on fire or something. BM>> Noted "Veteran's Day" up there, next week is Thanksgiving - time BM>> flies! ....Air Force does, turkeys don't? -- sort of a play on that BM>> sentence. NB>> If turkeys flew better they might not end up on the table, you NB>> mean...? And now it's the Sunday after Thanksgiving... haven't gained NB>> much, I guess... ;) I have had some unexpectedly busy days lately, NB>> though... BM> If turkeys flew better they might have ended up the national bird like BM> Ben Franklin wanted and we might be eating eagles for Thanksgiving!! BM> Well, they fly well already, need to think of an easy-to-catch animal BM> native to SE Massachusetts..... NB> Ummmm..... maybe we'd be having ham instead of turkey...? Some NB> people apparently do that anyway.... ;) The Pilgrims may have dine on wild boar. ...Don't know if boar live up there. As for ham for Thanksgiving, have heard of that -- grocery stores had the offer of buy a ham and get a turkey free. We've not done the ham-and-turkey dinner; not recalling where bought the offer and had separate meals. Could be simple logistics: freezer's not big enough to freeze both! And haven't heard of Turducken this year: turkey stuffed with duck stuffed with chicken. (Just thinking about that makes me feel stuffed!) NB>>>> ... Flood: A river that's too big for its bridges. BM>>> Flashback to the live news shots from the Centennial Bridge on the far BM>>> edge of downtown Davenport (IA): barriers to keep the water from the BM>>> exit. Reporter was standing in an inch or so of water and could hear BM>>> the pumps in the background. NB>>> Yup, perfect example.... :) BM>> Earlier this week quick news items announcing a meeting of one of the BM>> committees dealing with funds for flood recovery -- essentially was if BM>> businesses/residents effected by the flood needed money might be BM>> eligible for funding. NB>> So they still have some funding left.... BM> Appeared so, or possibly also some alternative funds not directly BM> flood-related but maybe along the lines of general small business BM> disaster recovery like for a fire. NB> I guess that could make sense, too.... :) Just glad I don't have to be a direct part of that! ¯ ® ¯ Barry_Martin_3@ ® ¯ @Q.COM ® ¯ ® ....
