Subj : Millikan's was: Wegman's To : Nancy Backus From : Barry Martin Date : Sun Dec 01 2019 11:36:00 Hi Nancy! BM>> desired. She's not ready for the "why didn't this work" detailing but BM>> a "what can be done differently to get it to work". Simple BM>> considerations like too big or too small or too flimsy. NB>> Or just the "why don't we try it this way instead...." It can be NB>> an exercise in teaching her to think analytically BM> True; what I say gets changed with the situation: "what would happen BM> if ww did it ?:, "let's try using :, etc. BM> Sometimes even a "well that didn't work as expected". IMO the idea is BM> more to put a positive spin on the failure as it's not failure but BM> something not going as intended. Sort of trying to reinforce things BM> won't go as desired all the time, so try again. ...Easier done than BM> typed! NB> Yup. :) And sort of a tangent to that, Autumn was up here in the Computer Room with me, colouring. Well, she was colouring; I was putting some stuff away. Semi-original plan was she came up to get me to play and then she decided she wanted to stay up here and colour. I had gotten ready to leave -- put Pandora (Internet radio) on pause; when she came back with her colouring pad sat at the desk. I told her to tap the space bar on the keyboard (and pointing) so as to turn the music back on. Also interjected it was OK to touch the keyboard this time because I told her to do it: normally I'm reminding her to be careful not to touch the keyboards. BM>> ...Not stating to her in absolutes but in a manner to indicate what BM>> wasn't quite right. As you said, don't brand as a failure but help BM>> figure out what to do to get to work. NB>> And it's good to draw the distinction between an action being a NB>> failure (or just not working out as expected) instead of the person NB>> being told she is a failure... :) BM> Oh definitely!! Failure will happen, just don't let the failure have BM> the last word. BM> Also popped into my thoughts: I remind her I'm available to help. The BM> "child psychologist explanation" is to stand back and let her do it BM> (whatever she's attempting to do), but if she decides she needs BM> assistance it's available. We all had to learn by doing. NB> And knowing where to look for help is also a good lesson to be NB> learned... Yes, sort of you don't know everything, learn by doing sometimes works, though sometimes better to ask someone for help. BM>>> As far as sorting through the data, not really around here! Too much BM>>> of 'may be needed some day'. OTOH the last time I went into those BM>>> directories.... No real need to: have only used 16% of this hard drive. NB>>> So you have plenty of space.... for now.... I don't do a lot NB>>> of the winnowing either, except of email messages.... BM>> I also tend to go for convenience: flipping through floppies/zip BM>> disks/ USB hard drives, etc., is sort of a nuisance to me, especially BM>> when I tend to be a little sloppy in labelling and sorting. That darn BM>> procrastination slips in! NB>> At least you have a lot of space right there on your computer's NB>> hard drive.... ;) BM> Yes. :) Also have no qualms about creating a temporary work area so BM> I can keep the original untouched. NB> That can be a good idea, too... :) Sometimes a very good idea!! I lost a temporary file yesterday. Definately did a copy function. Looked in Trash: didn't find it. Was a temporary 'placeholder' type of file and not worth the time to look for it so just copied in another. (Not all that concerned about why the original disappeared because of what I was doing, for some other project would be very concerned.) NB>>>> ... Multigrain cereals: boxes full of small cookies with oat bran NB>>>> added. BM>>> Reminds me of my grocery shopping trip yesterday. Glance through the BM>>> ad - their store brand cereal is on sale at 99›. OK, I could pick up BM>>> some at that price. Ends up just their 'cookies for breakfast' cereals BM>>> were, not the healthier (and so more expensive) ones. Not a case of BM>>> false advertising as different brand line. The ones I like will be on BM>>> sale eventually, not for 99›. Have to pay for the better ingredients. NB>>> Indeed. :) BM>> And IMO worth it. I do like cookies (the edible kind, some of the BM>> computer kind are OK), but not a fan of them as a breakfast. NB>> I'm not much for breakfast of any sort anyway... An actually NB>> nutritious cookie might be a substitute were I actually up and hungry NB>> at that time of day... Just as likely to be some sort of NB>> leftovers, though... :) BM> A lot of "it all depends" on that! If one grabs a donut for breakfast BM> the oatmeal cookie would probably be a better nutritional choice. BM> Your breakfast of leftovers probably isn't too far off from the "part BM> of a complete nutritious breakfast" voiceover: leftover potato: hash BM> browns! Hunk of meat: ham steak, bacon, sausage. Green beans: ummm, BM> part of a Denver omelette? NB> That sounds more extensive than I'm likely to be having... And NB> often mine doesn't have much of a resemblance to a "normal" NB> breakfast... :) I/we generally don't eat a balanced meal but the meals do balance out. ¯ ® ¯ Barry_Martin_3@ ® ¯ @Q.COM ® ¯ ® ....
