Subj : Millikan's was: Wegman's To : Nancy Backus From : Barry Martin Date : Sat Nov 09 2019 17:22:00 Hi Nancy! NB>>> Could be interesting... :) As you say, one doesn't want to push, NB>>> but there are certainly ways to encourage... :) BM>> Right: encouraging (IMO) is a much better way -- explore and maybe BM>> find something you didn't know you liked. I even sort of encourage BM>> doing things the wrong way (up to a point!): I know from experience BM>> it's going to come out wrong but she doesn't, and for sometimes BM>> personal experience is the best teacher. Also sometimes can be used to BM>> emphasize I/we know so go by what we say. NB>> One does tend to learn better how not to do things by experience NB>> than by just being told, for many things.... BM> Right; failing generally isn't a good thing, but it does help one BM> learn how not to fail the next time. And there probably will be a 'how BM> not to fail as badly next time' as one usually doesn't totally succeed BM> on the first or second try of something new. NB> As long as one isn't branded as a failure.... Right. There failures, of course, but IMO the idea isn't to think of them as a failed outcome but rather an outcome that didn't go as desired. She's not ready for the "why didn't this work" detailing but a "what can be done differently to get it to work". Simple considerations like too big or too small or too flimsy. ...Not stating to her in absolutes but in a manner to indicate what wasn't quite right. As you said, don't brand as a failure but help figure out what to do to get to work. BM>>> And that's how I ran low on hard drive space over the years: this BM>>> looks interesting, this is worthwhile to have handy.... NB>>> Yup... a little file here, a slightly larger one there... sooner NB>>> or later, they all add up... :) BM>> And thus the need for multi-terabyte drives! NB>> Or at least lots of zipdisks... ;) And/or a periodic winnowing NB>> out of the saved stuff.... ;) BM> I've not played with zipdisks; one of my refurbished computer BM> purchases some time back came with one but never got around to getting BM> the disk. NB> The zipdisks (and all I have are the original 100meg ones) are NB> how I get around the limitations of a smaller hard drive... :) Works for me! :) BM> As far as sorting through the data, not really around here! Too much BM> of 'may be needed some day'. OTOH the last time I went into those BM> directories.... No real need to: have only used 16% of this hard drive. NB> So you have plenty of space.... for now.... I don't do a lot NB> of the winnowing either, except of email messages.... I also tend to go for convenience: flipping through floppies/zip disks/ USB hard drives, etc., is sort of a nuisance to me, especially when I tend to be a little sloppy in labelling and sorting. That darn procrastination slips in! BM>>> And now Daryl has additional Arkansas Square Dancing duties.... NB>>> Mostly only himself to blame... ;) Not a bad thing to keep busy, NB>>> though.... :) BM>> I don't think I'd use 'blame'. :) Keeping busy is a good thing! And BM>> something enjoyable even better. NB>> I was using it in the semi-jocular sense... And as long as it is NB>> enjoyable, probably not too much of a burden... :) BM> Knew that. :) And he's either really busy with the square dancing or BM> lots of thunderstorms down there. No automatic posts lately either. NB> He sent a message to the moderator of Memories (Fido) recently NB> that he'd not be around for a while, between having things he had NB> to take care of and the expected weather issues.... He's not NB> been there lately either, including the automatic posts... so it NB> does look as though the bbs isn't up and running either... He has taken his BBS down with impending bad weather - was one of the items discussed when he applied. Seems like too long a time to be off-line, but he's got a few other things to take care of besides the BBS and us. NB>> ... Multigrain cereals: boxes full of small cookies with oat bran NB>> added. BM> Reminds me of my grocery shopping trip yesterday. Glance through the BM> ad - their store brand cereal is on sale at 99›. OK, I could pick up BM> some at that price. Ends up just their 'cookies for breakfast' cereals BM> were, not the healthier (and so more expensive) ones. Not a case of BM> false advertising as different brand line. The ones I like will be on BM> sale eventually, not for 99›. Have to pay for the better ingredients. NB> Indeed. :) And IMO worth it. I do like cookies (the edible kind, some of the computer kind are OK), but not a fan of them as a breakfast. ¯ ® ¯ Barry_Martin_3@ ® ¯ @Q.COM ® ¯ ® .... Cookie Monster Alert!...
