Part of it is if they can grab the consumer's money now a competitor 
can't get it later.

I don't recall anything like the fistfight over the last chair like 
OfficeMax had!  A bit of minor nastiness but nothing to that degree.  
And think some time ago I wrote about the guy who was getting a little 
nasty about not being able to get a shopping cart; only thing I could do
was give his a $5 coupon, which calmed him down and he was placated.
