Subj : Eggs! To : Nancy Backus From : Barry Martin Date : Wed Oct 16 2019 17:28:00 Hi Nancy! Nope, never did see see a jar of eggs at Hy-Vee. BM>> I had switched to my 'rice-and' microwave lunches because I got sick BM>> of sandwiches. (The department manager had give them that name, run BM>> together as "riceand" because what I had brought smelled pretty good BM>> and fairly consistently had a base of rice, some Velveeta cheese [for BM>> flavour and calcium] and topped with frozen vegetables and/or leftover BM>> meat/chicken.) NB>> You'd have a bit of variety that way, while still a low-hassle meal... BM> Yes, and to me especially the 'variety' part. For some reason never BM> liked the idea I knew what I was having for lunch (because I made it BM> the night before). With the 'rice-and' made up ahead of time and froze BM> in individual servings. Still knew the general makeup but randomized BM> things so maybe two had chicken, a couple just vegetables, two or BM> three more with something else. Mix 'em up before putting in the BM> freezer. Still do that 'surprise!' thing with my (individual serving BM> sized) yogurts: the labels are facing away from me so I don't know what BM> flavour I'm getting. NB> You like the randomization, I see... :) That might be the technical consideration; it was really I didn't want to know what I was having. OTOH the yoguty containers do get lined up because they look better, so orderly. Plus take up less room. NB>>> I suppose HyVee might have some sort of a complex at the NB>>> headquarters... Wegmans also has some sort of a main facility that NB>>> fills a lot of the prescriptions, especially the ones that don't need NB>>> to be picked up right away.... And it's still better to try to get NB>>> things refilled ahead of time, as some things still have to be NB>>> ordered by the local store... BM>> Yes: if prepared ahead of time I just need to say 'hi' and pick up my BM>> prescription. Otherwise 'hi' and get told it will be ready in 15-20 BM>> minutes. Not a problem as grocery shopping anyway, but it's the BM>> waiting for my turn -- seems invariably the second wait was after a BM>> 'complicated' customer. NB>> I call things in before we go into the store (except for the new ones NB>> from the doctor)... as long as they have it in stock, we can pick it NB>> up later the same day, and it'll be ready by the time we get there... NB>> but sometimes they have to order it in, or having the main facility NB>> do it, and then we'd need to get it another day.... But usually I'm NB>> calling early enough that it's a couple days before we do the NB>> shopping, so it's ready anyway when we get there.... BM> That way makes sense also, just for us easier to have automatic BM> refills. Also can poke at the cell phone and see if the refill BM> ready/will be ready. NB> I don't have an app for that... I suppose that we might be NB> able to set up auto refills, but haven't really explored it... NB> generally it's no real problem to just call in the refills... :) As long as it works out to your comfort! BM>> Yes. Wasn't too concerned as to the new location as not like the store BM>> is that big. ...As for the overall construction will be interesting BM>> this week to see what has happened: last week a lot of 'holes' ==> BM>> stock had been removed from shelves in preparation to do something with BM>> those sections. Seemed semi-random as far as the placement but quite BM>> sure there's a plan. I didn't have any problem finding what I needed. NB>> As long as you could find what you need... and I'm sure that NB>> you'll soon get used to the new setup when they're finished... ;) BM> So far have been able to find what I am looking for. What was sort of BM> funny is I was chatting with the cashier last week -- the semi- BM> automatic "did you find everything you needed?" to which I commented BM> back the 'yes' and joked something about the construction not yet BM> moving what I shop for. She (the cashier) lamented there were items BM> she had shopped for but couldn't find now. NB> Meanwhile, our Wegmans store is busy moving everything all around NB> the store... not particularly because of any obvious remodeling, NB> just a general shakeup... Richard was prepared to answer the NB> "did you find everything" question with something like "yes, but NB> no thanks to the store", as we had to really search for a few NB> things we needed... Not as bad as the cashier I had last week chatting she couldn't find what she was looking for and she works there! BM>>> Appears HyVee is smaller: one Pharmacist on duty and three or four BM>>> technicians. And occasionally they have waited on each other for a BM>>> register. Se what the remodel unveils! NB>>> We usually have at least three pharmacists on duty... there's a NB>>> wall with their pictures displayed, there's 8 or 10 pictures of NB>>> the current pharmacists... :) BM>> Similar, though thinking four possibly five pharmacists and a dozen BM>> techs. NB>> Not sure how many techs we have all told, haven't really kept NB>> track... we do recognize some of them, but there seems to always NB>> be someone new... ;) BM> Might be a training store, or perhaps one of the regular techs or BM> pharmacists is on vacation and a temp is in from another store. NB> I don't think so... we've been at this store for quite a while... NB> ever since they closed the one we used to shop at... I think that NB> there has just been a lot of turnover lately, actually... :) Possibly. And some of the turnover could be a result of a tiny handful of pharmacy staff moving on and the rest moving to fill their position. Effectively looks like a big change. BM> ...The hardware store down the hill did a major remodel a BM> few years ago and now the layout is opposite the original: if a BM> department was to the left before is to the right now. Don't think BM> Hy-Vee is going to do that! NB> That is a major overhaul... :) And I guess you'll find out NB> finally about what Hy-Vee has in mind.... :) Yes, eventually. Also found out last week the store will be enlarging by 3,000+ square feet. Apparently the liquor store portion will be moving over but don't know what wil go where the liquor was -- stay tuned! BM>> I see a tiny fraction of their business so wouldn't guess. From my BM>> viewpoint it's "who needs to go shopping for groceries at 3:30 in the BM>> morning?" but if I was working night shift like I was 45 years ago it BM>> might make sense to shop after work/before going home. NB>> Haven't done it for a few years now, but there was a time that we did NB>> do some shopping in the wee hours... I've come off a "shift" in the NB>> hospital, staying with someone finally admitted there, and needing NB>> to stop by and pick up something quick.... or needed to pick up an NB>> antiobiotic prescription for someone at a 24 hour pharmacy at 2, 3 NB>> in the morning... BM> Yes, makes sense. When I worked 2nd shift I was still living with my BM> parents so the refrigerator, etc., 'magically' filled themselves; not BM> quite the same as you. NB> That would make a difference how you viewed things... ;) Even though I did go grocery shopping with my parents frequently, so not totally 'magical'. NB>>>> Sounds like a case of technology being magic-equivalent... ;) BM>>> I could see converting to LED lighting: a lot less expensive to run BM>>> compared to the original florescent (plus can do a full-case lighting BM>>> as LED bulbs are small enough to run down the inside of the case BM>>> sides). Just seems like the additional cost of the circuit for motion BM>>> detection extends the pay-back time way out there. Maybe cheaper than BM>>> I'd guess and the pay-back time isn't that long. NB>>> Could be... ;) BM>> I haven't done a pay-back cost analysis like that so no idea. Suppose BM>> the 'guys in the green visors' have run it through numerous times. NB>> Probably... and/or there are some "new technology is always best" NB>> managers on the case... BM> Yes, and sometimes they don't listen and just go with what they think BM> is the right answer. Or do listen, just the experts haven't BM> experienced the full issue. Sort of trying to get in there where LEDs BM> will last 50,000 hours; the electronics supporting the LEDs might not BM> (the power supply, etc.). NB> Exactly... So avoid cheap brands, though that doesn't guarantee anything either. BM> Or the LED bulbs in the traffic lights. The BM> heat from the incandescent bulbs melted the snow accumulating on the BM> traffic light and so kept it clear. Hardly any heat from the LED BM> replacement, so the snow accumulates and blocks -- oops! NB> Yup.... That did end up being a rather inconvenient NB> development... :) Just a minor oversight! ¯ ® ¯ Barry_Martin_3@ ® ¯ @Q.COM ® ¯ ® ....
