Subj : moving or not was: CFBBS To : Nancy Backus From : Barry Martin Date : Sat Oct 05 2019 08:44:00 Hi Nancy! NB>>>> This set starts afternoon of Sept 3rd... :) BM>>> My yesterday, and answering your tomorrow. As for the problem BM>>> with the timestamp, yes, just need to look at the various switches for BM>>> PKZip and start playing. ...Actually looks like might be adding '-k' BM>>> -- just have to find the batch file. NB>>> Worth a try... :) BM>> A few But Firsts first.... NB>> As always... ;) BM> Yes.... OTOH my attitude is sometimes doing nothing is an BM> important But First. Just a short rest/break to not think. Or think. NB> Also valid... ;) and the But Firsts get me, too... Got home on NB> the 1st, but the transfer of the reply packets from the laptop to NB> the main box didn't happen until the next day... Found out when I NB> did my regular run that the reason I couldn't connect to Tiny's NB> while I was away even though I'd been able to get access to NB> telnet was that I hadn't updated the port in my dialing stack for NB> Tiny's... Just another sneaky little detail! And I probably would have been in the same situation as normally I don't go fiddling with settings unless I know I changed something shortly before the problem started, or know the other side made a change. NB> So here it is, already the afternoon of the 4th NB> (Friday), and I'm finally getting back to answering more NB> messages... One of the But Firsts, yesterday, was recovering from NB> a grueling hour plus in the dentist chair that morning... NB> triggered my dizziness rather badly, so I just spent most the NB> rest of the day in bed... ;) Much better today... :) And today NB> is the first day since getting back that I don't have to go out NB> for anything... ;) So here we are, back at the computer, NB> answering messages... :) Hmm: I think your dizziness wins over my gag reflex! Immediate guess would be leaning back in the chair altered your posture and your body didn't adapt. BM>> Yes. Just checked, still at my "paying for" connection speed (vs. the BM>> 1Kbps 'extra' I had). The other day noted my music (Pandora) had BM>> stopped and the DSL light was flashing on the Gateway (Router/Modem -- BM>> whichever name it goes by). Didn't notice anything before nor after. BM>> Maybe someone else was having problems and they did a reboot. NB>> Sounds plausible... :) And a good thing it was essentially just NB>> a glitch for you.... BM> Yes, though glad I'm not doing something important at the time like BM> on-line banking or a purchase. NB> Indeed... probably would have had to start all over, and hope NB> nothing untoward happened in the meantime... ;) Yes. I'm thinking generally the obvious of a transaction did or didn't occur and normally could log back in and check transaction history, if a money transfer was made, etc. ...eBay -- know they have auctions but don't think they have live bidding. Suppose someone could try to swoop in at the last minute. ..Ah! RPG - Roll Playing Games! *Poof!* Where did Queen Nancitina go?! BM>>> Good news and bad: "bad" news is my DSL is back down to where I pay BM>>> for -- had been getting a kilobit extra. Good news is the apparent BM>>> download speed is surpassing what it had been, so what I'm requesting BM>>> shows up on the screen significantly faster. NB>>> Sounds like mostly a betterment.... ;) BM>> Yes, slower one way, definitely faster another. And I like BM>> the "other" better! NB>> More useful... :) BM> Yes: overall faster even though one set of numbers would indicate BM> slightly slower. ...Ah great! Shouldn't have looked! Now I'm down BM> another 1Kbps! So 1K less than I'm paying for, which of course they BM> can weasel out of with the 'up to' clause. OTOH I don't know how long BM> it's been at that speed as haven't checked it since when I typed the BM> previous reply. Part of the I-74 Bridge construction is around the BM> Central Office, so could be something to do with that. NB> And it probably varies some from day to day and hour to hour, NB> anyway, depending on how many other people are trying to use it NB> at any one time... ;) My guess also. Ages ago when cable was getting in to the -- what is it called? Cable version of DSL -- market there as the 'warning' of the connection would slow down the more people on the block/in the area were on-line. ...And I just checked: back up to 8Mbps. ...Can tell I'm really concerned about the speed as the last time I checked was when I talked about it in an e-mail with you. (FWIW last time I checked the max. rate level available here was 10 Mbps.) BM>>> Now will have to dig out the NCID project (for call-rejection of BM>>> spam calls) and see if it works up here now. Probably still should BM>>> move/have moved the electric line running next to the telephone, BM>>> antenna coax, and network cable. NB>>> And we are starting to get the sort of temps now that should make NB>>> it a possible job... just have to get an electrician in now... ;) BM>> Well, LIS in an earlier message, missed that window: currently 83ø out BM>> and to get into the 90's. ...There's time. NB>> Yup, the cooler enough but not too cold yet will come back soon NB>> enough.... ;) BM> Yes. Today would be good (except for other projects going on) as BM> currently 70ø and one set of forecasts indicated a high of 74 or 75ø BM> and another a little bit warmer. Cloudy (on and off rain all day) so BM> no Sun to heat the roof up. Will have another opportunity. NB> Hopefully soon... :) Got tbose But Firsts going on so holding off. BM>>>> Land transfers can be part of family history. Son gets married, BM>>>> parents 'break off' a piece of their farm for the newly-married NB> couple. BM>>>> ...Or a piece is transferred as payment for debt. NB>>>> It also documents where a family is living, perhaps where they came NB>>>> from or where they moved to, and often can list all the heirs (with NB>>>> married names and spouses) when something was inherited by all, and NB>>>> then sold or transferred either to one of them or to a new owner... BM>>> That would be helpful in verifying genealogical records! Everyone BM>>> present and accounted for? Someone not listed? Why? NB>>> Yup, sometimes verifies, sometimes brings up questions to pursue, and NB>>> sometimes gives information about spouses and/or married names that NB>>> one hadn't yet known.... :) BM>> Those little surprises can be interesting! NB>> And sometimes even give the little tidbit of information that NB>> breaks down a brick wall... :) BM> "All of a sudden it makes sense!" NB> Exactly... :) And might finally prove a connection that one NB> suspected, but could never state, since unproven... Or inquiring would not be 'socially correct'. ¯ ® ¯ Barry_Martin_3@ ® ¯ @Q.COM ® ¯ ® ....
