Personally I am in general favour of a spanking when warranted.  One 
swat may be sufficient, sometimes two or three.  Anything beyond is 
probably a sign the person issuing the punishment is out of control.  
And not really a punishment but more correction.

I remember being spanked two, maybe three times.  The warning of being 
in  trouble, or about to be in trouble was "do you want [to be spanked 
with] the wooden spoon?".  I don't recall ever being struck with a
wooden spoon much less one being taken out of the drawer but do know if 
I got that threat the next step would not be pleasant for me.

Sort of along that to me the old movie scene of the camera panning from 
the couple about to make love on the beach to the ocean and sky was a 
little silly, OTOH I don't paricularly want to see them ripping off 
their clothes and "doing the nasty" either.  (Then I'm thinking of the 
blooper: "durn elastic won't break/tear!".)
