Subj : Todays Blooper To : Daryl Stout From : Barry Martin Date : Wed Sep 30 2020 09:00:00 Hi Daryl! DS> You're just full of good news. :P BM> At least it's just news this time! DS> I'm full of the other stuff...that's why my eyes are brown. I've heard of Yellow Journalism but not Brown! DS> I've got a problem on the BBS that can't seem to be fixed (the DS> posts show UTC time instead of CDT or CST). I even put a default DS> message header file in there, and it's still showing up that way. Sounds like a variation of what goes one here where the messages have a timestamp based on when they were downloaded from or uploaded. DS> To make matters worse, several square dancers have chewed me DS> out on a message that I posted, on folks "not following DS> directions". DS> Basically, I send a reminder card with instructions on what to DS> do to renew their expiring print subscription to the state square DS> dance publication. Well, these folks can't follow directions, in DS> that they: DS> 1) Make the check to me instead of the organization. DS> 2) Make the check out for the improper amount. DS> 3) Do not sign the check (the bank won't take it). DS> 4) Mail it to me instead of the treasurer. DS> 5) Fail to check their info and notify me if it's wrong. Sounds like the old comedy routine where the bill payer was buying a little more time by 'accidentally' putting the Electric Company's check in the Gas Company's envelope, etc, DS> This basically is extra work for me, in that I have to: DS> A) Purchase an envelope and postage. DS> B) Put the one check in my bank, but have to wait for it to clear DS> (funds are low). Then, write a new check out of my account, and DS> mail it to the treasurer (where it should've gone in the first DS> place). C) Put the unsigned or improper amount check back in the DS> mail to the sender. Hopefully if (C) you're not doing (B) -- no wonder funds are low! Yes, a nuisance to correct the things others have done wrong. Wonder if a "statement section" on the letter would help? Would be like the section one tears off a business's billing which has the return address and amount due. The 'where to' information would be there along with the amount to pay. And I'm thinking so what if the other person pays the wrong amount? Let the treasurer deal with the problem. The treasurer has to if the square dancer sends the check directly like they're supposed to. Also thinking maybe have a second address for the treasurer just above the 'tear off' section: the square dancer could cut this one out and tape to their envelope. (So make sure the address sections are at the left or right margin so can be cut out easily.) DS> It's basically a waste of time and money. Maybe my suggestions will help lessen that problem. DS> So, I've hidden the directory of stuff on the computer (I have DS> no idea how to get it back now), and have also removed GMail from DS> the phone, and changed the lock codes on the computers and DS> phones. I'm seriously considering just chunking ALL my hobbies, DS> and disappearing for a good while. The auto posts will continue, DS> along with the weather updates, but I may not actually logon DS> again for awhile. Taking a few days or maybe a week at most might not be a bad idea, but the 100% exclusion of everthing and everyone I think is a bad idea: seems to me like cutting all leaves you with no one to vent to, no one to give ideas and alternate considerations (like I did with the errant square dancers above). If Suzy calls or e-mails and she's a PITA you don't have to answer. If Mark e-mails and he's fun you can respond. DS> And, if this wasn't bad enough, that annuity deal hasn't DS> arrived yet (darn Ultra Slow (US) Snail), and I'm about of food DS> (not even $5 in the bank right now). Is the slowness problem the Postal Service or the insurance company dragging their feet? The USPS can't deliver what they don't have. DS> So, I'm just going to stay home, and not eat anything until DS> Friday (I need to lose weight badly, anyway). All I'll do on the DS> BBS is my QWK Mail processing, and the updating of the ham radio DS> and weather bulletins. I'd probably be stocking up on Ramen Noodles (use only a third of the seasoning packet) at 25› -- have seen multipacks on sale. Or maybe pasta -- Hy-Vee recenty had pound boxes on sale for a dollar. And yes, do Fun Stuff like QWK mail and the bulletins. Sure the updating could have a problem area -- 'fun' doesn't have to be all balloons and lollipops, but more 'entertaining' and 'enjoyable': I like taking on a problem and fixing it! I feel good when it's done and working right! DS> With the EFT, you don't have to worry about it getting stolen DS> in the mail. True. And I do write down the process/approval number down in my ledger. Never needed it, but there just in case, BM> I do like that! Don't recall anything outgoing missing; have had some BM> incoming mail never show up over the decades. OTOH have had no-show BM> commercial e-mail also. Anyway, nice thing about EFT is can make the BM> payment as close as possible to the due date, which probably in r BM> eality gives me a whole cent or two of interest over the year, but the BM> idea I'm hanging on to my money as long as possible is appealing! DS> There is so much political gridlock in Washington, that members DS> of Congress are getting antsy to go home to campaign "to get DS> re-erected to screw us" (misspelling and puns intended), but DS> they'll have nothing to show for their efforts. I'll bet the DS> government will shut down, and there won't be any COVID-19 stuff. Yes, I'm not sure what they do there other than waste time, argue, and look out for themselves. Quite sure they do do some representing of the People, but.... DS> I have no interest at all in watching the debate DS> tonight...whether or not Trump and Biden are (pun intended) DS> Master-D-Baitors. I'll do my ham radio traffic net, submit the DS> logs, and crash out. Personally I didn't watch the Presidential debate last night either, though will look at extracts from various sources later today. I sort of went into the decision not to watch live biased: IMO Mr. Trump is not a good public speaker, which is sort of a necessity for a politician. Mr. Biden is a lawyer and a decent public speaker, so phrases to get listeners to agree with him. BM> I vaguely remember "Quisp", not recalling "Quake" at all. DS> There was a time when they were going to apparently do away DS> with "Quake", but it was planned that they were going to DS> revitalize it. I tend to not like sweet cereals and so stick with shredded wheat (plain), topped with a generic Grape Nuts and raisins - lots of raisins! OTOH I do like breakfast sweets: donuts, and the like. Let myself go and I'd make Cookie Monster look like Emily Post was dining! BM> 'Cause two different people! OTOH some in families the siblings are BM> almost duplicates while in others like yours almost like some babies BM> were thrown together randomly. Which caused them to cry from being BM> startled, and get their breakfast all soggy! DS> Don't startle me...I tend to poop easily. :P "Surprise!" in more ways than intended! ¯ BarryMartin3@ ® ¯ @MyMetronet.NET ® ....
