If I needed a different key, I used different chords to get that, not that my fingers didn't wander a little higher up the fretboard than the first 3 frets at times.. B) Actually, way back when playing rock music on an electric guitar with our group - 3 guitars and a drummer - I'd occasionally play they same music once up the keyboard using simplified bar chords and then the next time, using chords staying down just to confuse people.. At least for the first year I was the only one who could play real chords, the others were more just hitting single notes that went along with the song, more like playing bass than treble.
