Subj : Square/Round Dance News To : All From : Daryl Stout Date : Sun Aug 08 2021 23:26:20 The deadline for items for "The Modern Square", Arkansas' monthly publication on square and round dancing in the state, published by the Arkansas State Square Dance Federation, is normally the 14th of the month, preceding the month of issue. However, when the 14th falls on a weekend, that means a slight extension, because Arkansas Printing is closed on the weekend. I then try to send in the data for the print edition, plus release the e-Edition, on the first business day after the 14th. So, if items are to me by 6pm Central Time the day before the first business day after that, I will accept the items. But, if they arrive after that time, they will have to wait until the next issue. Items included are club reports, fliers, ads, updates on clubs and when they dance, updates for callers and cuers, and photos for the e-Edition. While updates for e-Edition subscribers can be sent out in an email blast, those without email don't have this luxury. I'm doing minimal editing, mainly for grammatical issues, and if I need to conserve space in the print edition. The print edition must be in a set of pages of 4 (i.e. 12, 16, 20, 24, etc.). The ASSDF's goal is to keep the print edition at 16 pages or less. Note that there is no such limitation for the e-Edition, and the items will be published "as is". Also, with the e-Edition, the Special Events Calendar will list dates and links to square and round dance festivals around the country...but these are NOT listed in the print edition. Due to the ever increasing cost of postage and printing, as well as for the website hosting and related costs, the prices are the same for an ad, flier, etc., no matter what the size desired. For the print edition, it's $35, since it's done on a monthly basis. For the e-Edition, it's only $5...but that cost goes toward the website hosting fees, which include the website hosting, domain, data backup, and security fees, which are paid on a yearly basis. Also, with fliers or ads, payment for such (check or money order payable to ASSDF), must be received by the Treasurer by the 14th of the month, preceding the month of issue, regardless of when it falls. For these ads and fliers, if I haven't received word that payment has been received, then the ad or flier will not run in that issue. There are quite a few people who don't have, can't get, or don't want a computer or internet access...and some parts of Arkansas are so rural, that cellphone and internet service are only "a pipe dream", and landline service can be rather expensive and spotty. Indeed, even with amateur radio, which promotes itself as the mode of communication "When All Else Fails", some areas are so isolated, that the ham radio operators have to operate what's known as "simplex", as they can't hit the repeaters from where they're located. And, these "hams" provide communications to various "public service events", to alert medical staff should an event participant need assistance.
