Like you, I am up for trying out the various BBS software and I gave Synchronet a try.  
Unfortunately, I did something wrong when I tried an upgrade and the whole thing took 
a crap.  That was the end of my working with Synchronet.

Honestly, I am afraid to do updates on Mystic for that same reason.  Winserver is my 
main system.  Mystic is great for hubbing the networks.  I don't feel the need to 
change it in any way.

Having said that, I shut it down once month, zip up the entire directory so I can use it 
as a backup if anything bad happens.
