Society has got us used to the idea that everything is safe because somebody
else has taken responsibility for it.

If you get on a car, you have the notion that the car is safe because the car
maker has taken responsibility for it, and you think if it wasn't safe they
would not allow them to make it. Same with buildings, planes, industrial
machines.

Past some point you start to think spelunking in certain cave which is open to
visitors has to be safe, because it it wasn't, they would have closed it to the
public already.

Then the John Erwards incident happens and people is surprised.

We have become insensitized to danger because we think we can outsource
identifying danger to third parties. That works often but not always.
