There was a detection system to decide if a monitot was mono or colour. In strictly mono mode they're only using the green video feed, so greys are limited. If you either added an adapter to the monitot to make the card see colour or the card didn't care what was attached or you could fool it some other way, then yes you could get "256" greys except it wouldn't really be 256... but it did result in a far better, more graduated picture....
