They were great for minimal footprint, less power consumption and fewer distractions. A lot of them also only relied on the green signal from the VGA card. Which limited their video output quite considerably. An old girlfried bought a system with a mono VGA, and in order to get it looking better, you'd power it up with a colour monitot attached, plug the mono in, and you'd get shades for the colours. Otherwise you'd have a lot of black looking stuff on it. Don't recall what happened to that monitot now.
