I used to do that.  The problem I ran into was that the people I was
passing them onto usually wanted to receive "latest and greatest" and were
never happy with a second hand machine that could get them to their web and
email but maybe wouldn't "keep up with" what some of their other friends
were doing at the time.
 
Most of them came back and eventually went to the e-cycling center.  ;(
