It seemed that there were a lot of people who bought their first computer in the mid-90s and were getting on the internet and didn't really have a knowlege of BBSes. And I think Internet Explorer was included as an optional install in a Windows 95 add-on, and it came pre-installed in Windows 98. That was around the time of the Microsoft anti-trust trial, and Microsoft tried to say Internet Explorer was integrated into the OS and they couldn't remove it..
