I guess there's a couple of other things.  Melbourne had a very high density
BBS population, and they were all familiar with dialup, it became a short
leap to the internet.  Back then we were close to the top of the heap for
internet adoption.

It fell off after dialup, the vested interests in telecommunications kept the
pricing on anything faster pretty expensive, and we gradually slid down the
same heap we'd been close to the top of.
