It was actually Cirrus I was trying to recall not S3.. I don't recall any of
the VESA cards being particularly good. In my area 95% of VESA cards were
Tridents.

Tseng somehow got caught out by the whole 3D thing.  Someone either thought
it was just a flash in the pan, or it moved forward a lot faster than they
expected it.  The ET6000 was s'posedly a rushed project to get anything with
3D on it.  But it was a slug as mentioned and they never recovered from
there.  They just weren't prepared for the 3D boom.
