The motherboard in my main PC has a header for a serial port on it. A couple years ago, I bought a breakout cable so that I now have a serial port on the back of the PC. I'm not using it now, but I remember it looked like that serial port on the motherboard is connected to the USB bus.. My secondary PC (which my BBS runs on) is a Dell workstation that has a serial port on it, and it appears to be an actual serial port connected to the bus (it comes up in linux as a /dev/tty device rather than a USB device). I have a modem connected to it with a phone line so people can dial into my BBS if they want.
