If you can manage slip/ppp you could also run that over a serial link to a
Pi. In most cases you've have enough power available on the 5v line to mount
the thing internally.

SNAP!  The only thing we both left out there, was the UARTS are all pin
compatible, so anything socketed is a simple swap, while de-soldering them is
time consuming being a 40pin package, but doable.
